Every other week I write an email discussing what I learn launching and growing Reboot Motion. If you would like to receive it directly in your inbox, subscribe below.
A few weeks ago I caught up with a former professor of mine, Sean Johnson, who recently launched Madison to “help boutique consultants, accountants, attorneys, and agencies grow by becoming Trusted Advisors.”
Reboot Motion is not a professional services firm. But as we were talking, it become clear we had a lot in common with his target customer. Most notably, we both grow our businesses by becoming a trusted advisor.
No matter who we work with- MLB teams, NBA teams, the leagues themselves- people chose us because they trust us.
They trust our ability to process data at scale.
They trust our analysis.
But most of all, they trust our ability to make them better.
One of the major ways we build trust is by showing our work. We explain how:
We built our entire processing pipeline so it works 1) at scale and 2) in the wild.
We provide baseball’s best single camera motion capture.
Our metrics can be used to build actionable models.
After talking with Sean, and learning some of his core principles, I wanted go a step further and create a Reboot Manifesto, outlining our values, beliefs, and areas of focus- with each section offering a different insight:
Our Values are a promise as to the type of people our partners should interact with if they chose to work with us. It is also an internal promise to any team member of the people we will surround them with.
Our Beliefs show how we view the role of tech and innovation in elite sports.
Our Focus is the biproduct of our values and our beliefs. It is where we will put our energy and how we will make a huge impact in the sports world.
The Reboot Manifesto
Reboot’s Values
We are lifelong students. And lifelong teachers. We live in a world of constant change. If we want to be the best in the world at movement analysis, we need to always be learning, growing, and innovating. And we need to go further. Our partners don’t work with us because we’re smart. They work with us because we make them smarter.
We don’t have customers. We have partners. In the B2B world, success is defined by your ability to make others successful. The pro sports teams we work with should be winning, our main points of contact should be growing in their careers, and our tech partners should have flourishing businesses.
We live at the intersection of application and truth. A lot of things in sports are subjective. Data is not. We give our partners the most actionable truth possible.
We punch above our weight. Success is measured by impact, not head-count. We believe our small team can change the sports world.
We win with focus, curiosity, and passion. We are building sports tech software that elite sports organizations use daily. Our success comes from loving this mission and being singularly focused on it.
Reboot’s Beliefs
Success in sports is ultimately about the athlete. Everything comes down to 1) making the athlete successful or 2) making the person making the athlete successful, successful.
The best pro sports tech falls into the second category.
Analysts are wired to explore and innovate. Coaches will turn over every stone looking for new ways to develop talent and win games.
It is our job to help these groups, so they can help their athletes and their organizations.
Pro teams do not need another application with “proprietary ratings” no one understands. Rather, they need platforms and tools that make life better for their expert analysts, biomechanists, coaches, and scouts.
They need the people in the arena driving results. And the people in the arena need us to offer them leverage.
Reboot’s Focus
We will make our partners 10x more impactful because we know who we are, and we know who we are not.
What we’re not is explained in more detail here, but in short we are not:
A motion capture company. There are companies that are great at this, but we excel elsewhere- specifically in integrating with all the relevant mocap providers and providing a best in class movement analysis platform.
A remote coach. We believe in the power of great coaches, as well as great analysts. It is our job to power those in the arena so they can innovate and develop talent.
A black box. B2B and B2C sports tech are inherently different. We know we are best used as a tool for thinking, not as a mechanism to replace thought.
Once it is clear what we are not, it is easier to explain who we are:
Reboot Motion is a company dedicated to enabling large organizations to excel in biomechanics at scale, which we do via our best in class movement analysis platform, consisting of data transformation, tooling for further research, and unlimited biomechanics support.
Thanks Evan! This is great. The relationship between a player and a coach/trainer is so personal. I love the idea that Reboot is empowering coaches/trainers/analysts to push their athletes to the next level based on data-driven feedback.
