Every other week I write an email discussing what I learn launching and growing Reboot Motion. If you would like to receive it directly in your inbox, subscribe below.
Reboot Motion’s goal is to be the world’s best movement analysis company.
To accomplish that goal, we have to be clear about what we do. We:
Turn motion capture data into usable metrics at scale.
Enable organizations to innovate with a full biomechanics platform.
Guide those who are starting their journey- as many in the NBA are doing.
Provide pro sport’s best toolkit for biomechanists and analysts who prioritize swift innovation.
Success will not be easy. As we push forward with the goal of being the world’s best movement analysis platform, we should be equally clear about what we’re not. Reboot Motion is not:
A motion capture company
A remote coach
A black box
We are Not a Motion Capture Company
In pro baseball, HawkEye and KinaTrax dominate the marker-less motion capture space. It seems likely they will do the same in pro basketball (and beyond).
These companies are attacking incredibly complicated technical problems, looking to get as close as possible to lab quality data with cameras dispersed around a baseball diamond, basketball court, and elsewhere.
Here is how KinaTrax describes their in-game offering:
The system consists of multiple synchronized cameras capturing high-speed video zoomed in on the pitcher and hitter. Over half a decade, our system has been deployed in dozens of ballparks and used to analyze millions of plays. We ensure that all camera locations comply with sign-stealing regulations. As part of our complete turn-key solution, biomechanical and data processing services are included so that the user can focus entirely on making use of the data.
Why We Don’t Compete
In general, we don’t compete because we’re not the expert. Doing this well is hard. Really hard.
The clubs we work with, and the ones we hope to in the future, do not need another in-game marker-less motion capture solution.
They need someone to make the data they have as easy to use as possible.
What We Do Instead
Rather than compete, we complement.
Every motion capture company does things a bit differently, and turning data into action is not a trivial task. This is true for clubs when they are just getting started, as well as for the most advanced organizations.
Painting with a broad brush, pro sports teams face two major issues:
Their incredible biomechanists and data scientists are bogged down with mountains of data that isn’t “innovation ready”.
They have situations where data is needed and marker-less motion capture isn’t an option.
That’s where we come in.
Our biomechanics pipeline processes motion capture data at scale, so front offices can focus on research and innovation.
Our video based motion capture solution acts as an ideal complement when in-game marker-less systems aren’t available.
Our dashboard and toolkit bring everything together in a single spot for better communication.
We believe it is only a matter of time until marker-less motion capture is in every pro sport, as well as in college athletics and training facilities.
As that happens, our focus will remain on being the best software complement possible.
We are Not a Remote Coach
On top of not being a motion capture company, we also explicitly stay away from remote coaching.
Why We Don’t Compete
We believe in the power of the coach-athlete relationship. We want to empower coaches, not replace them.
At the elite level, we think marrying tech with great coaching is the best unlock to success. And when going down market, we think there are others (coaches and other tech companies) who are better suited to speak to athletes.
What We Do Instead
Rather than directly help athletes, our goal is to help others help athletes, which we do in two ways:
Reboot Infrastructure, where we deliver joint angles and energy and momentum metrics to team biomechanists and analysts, so they can innovate and bring their takeaways to the field, and
Reboot Analysis, where our reports go directly to coaches, offering x-ray vision into how their athletes move.
In both cases, we work behind the scenes to provide support to the people in the arena. We believe they are the best decision makers. We simply give them tools.
We are Not a Black Box
The final thing we are not is a black box, especially as it relates to transforming raw data into metrics biomechanists, analysts, and coaches use every day.
Why We’re Not
Our focus is on our enterprise partners. In order to best serve MLB teams, NBA teams, and beyond, people need to trust the metrics we deliver.
If we don’t let our partners peak under the hood, we can’t build the trust necessary to help them innovate, and we will become just another company that uses numbers to replace thought.
What We Do Instead
Rather than spit out numbers based on “a proprietary algorithm”, we show our work.
For our core offering- our biomechanics pipeline, we deliver the results from every step in the process: 1) clean joint centers 2) joint angles 3) momentum and energy metrics and 4) reports.
For our video based motion capture and other tools that use machine learning, we sit down with our teams and explain the process for how we came up with our solution.
We are asking organizations to trust our tools to help them find their next edge. And we’re asking the people inside them to trust us with their careers.
To earn that trust we have to show our work.
Knowing What We’re Not Makes Us Who We Are
Our goal is to be the best movement analysis company in the world. This means we have to put all of our attention into being able to take in data and turn it into action for our enterprise partners.
That alone is a hard enough goal.
To reach it, we have to say no to everything else.
