Reboot Spotlight: Data Export via the Reboot Dashboard
How we're making it easier for analysts to turn motion capture data into action
Every other week I write an email discussing what I learn growing Reboot Motion. If you would like to receive it directly in your inbox, subscribe below.
Our Reboot Spotlight series is a new one where I sit down with members of the Reboot team and have them discuss their work.
I recently sat down with Christina Vieira, one of Reboot’s incredible engineers, to dive into new functionality in our Dashboard- Data Export.
The following is a recap of how she view this as a win for our partner teams.

In Auren Hoffman’s Data as a Service Bible, he notes three things a data company does:
Data Acquisition,
Data Transformation, and
Data Delivery
While this sounds obvious, being explicit is important- because any successful data company (and we are a data company) has to execute all three.
At Reboot, data acquisition, is mostly taken care of for us. Our partners already have more motion capture data and raw video than they know what to do with- and our API includes upload endpoints to programmatically send information our way.
Data transformation is where spend the majority of our time. Processing movement data is our core focus and is something I have discussed at length with posts on 1) biomechanics as a service 2) single camera mocap 3) biomechanics at scale and more.
But to date I haven’t really talked about the last part- data delivery.
And that is a miss.
It is a miss because transforming data doesn’t matter if the data isn’t seamlessly delivered back to partners.
As Hoffman writes, data companies succeed by “having the correct facts and having an easy way to deliver those facts.”
Data Export
When working with enterprises, we know no two organizations are the same. In fact, we know no two users within an organization are the same.
To allow for multiple use cases, we built a Data Export endpoint into our API, allowing our pro sports partners to systematically pull 1) inverse kinematic files 2) momentum files 3) metrics and 4) metadata into their system on a daily basis, so they can store data and work with it however they want.
Now Via the Dashboard
We love our Data Export API. But it’s not for everyone.
Specifically it’s not for non-coding analysts who want answers to a specific question.
For those instances, we need to make the data as easy as possible to query and grab, so analysts can get to work.
Here is Christina showing with a quick demo:
(Editor’s note: the real dashboard has less blurred out information)
Making Our Partners Better
Our partners do not work with us because we understand movement data. They work with us because we make them better at what they do. We make it easier for biomechanists to do research, analysts to build models, and coaches to develop talent.
In order to provide the most leverage possible, our robust biomechanics pipeline is necessary…but it’s not sufficient.
Our engineering team needs to build bridges to meet each individual we work with where they are.
And the ability to easily export the exact data someone wants, either via our API or our dashboard, is another way we look to make it as easy as possible.
