Every other week I write an email discussing what I learn launching and growing Reboot Motion. If you would like to receive it directly in your inbox, subscribe below.
Reboot’s mission is to help biomechanists, analysts, and coaches help athletes move better.
Last year, we took a step towards that goal by integrating with TruMedia.
TruMedia shares our belief that the best enterprise sports tech does not prescribe answers, but rather provides the tools for teams to systematically find their own advantages. While we focus on backend processing of movement data, and TruMedia’s expertise lies in frontend tools for data analysis, the vision is the same:
Empower members of professional sports organizations to drive their teams forward.
The idea behind our integration was simple. If a club 1) has their mocap processed by Reboot Motion and 2) analyzes data via TruMedia, we would make them happier by offering the ability to view Reboot metrics inside the TruMedia platform.
Building Better Off Ramps
Next season, we are deepening this relationship with the following goals in mind:
Ensure movement data- or what we call “how data”- is as accessible as any other piece of data.
Guarantee our mutual partners get a unique experience that maintains their competitive advantage.
Growing the Popularity of Movement Data
Reboot is constantly looking to expand the popularity of movement analysis, which is best done by making it easier to either 1) capture data or 2) analyze the results.
For MLB teams, data capture is easy…or at least it is already taken care of. Teams are inundated with in-game mocap installations throughout Major League Baseball…and we are well on our way to HawkEye and KinaTrax setups being commonplace in the minor leagues and beyond.
Simply put, we are arriving at a point where we have too much data. We need to to make it easier to analyze. And that is what we are doing with TruMedia.
The Details
TruMedia will be going to market this offseason with two offerings powered by Reboot Motion: 1) an MLB Biomechanics Package and 2) a Comprehensive Biomechanics package.
The MLB biomechanics package will allow any team to view standard biomechanics data (ex. joint angles) inside the TruMedia platform for all MLB games.
The Comprehensive Biomechanics package will offer the same opportunity, but with an expanded dataset that includes minor league data via MLB’s data share.
Joe Hultzen of TruMedia offers a demo of how this looks in the wild below:
Helping our Partners Maintain Their Edge
While growing the popularity of movement analysis is important, given the zero sum nature of pro sports, we also need to make sure our partners maintained their edge, which we are doing in a few ways:
Reboot partners (who also have TruMedia) will receive TruMedia’s new packages at no additional charge.
Reboot partners will be able to view all of their data- classic biomechanics data (joint angles), energy and momentum metrics, time series data, pitch by pitch metrics, etc.- all inside the TruMedia platform, and also at no additional cost.
Whether via TruMedia or through other connections with Reboot, Reboot partners can take the data “off platform” and play with it, conduct their own research, build models, etc.
Defining Success
The Reboot TruMedia integration will be deemed a success if:
TruMedia’s biomechanics offerings make movement analysis commonplace, and
Reboot and TruMedia mutual partners receive an extra unlock with a seamless blending of backend biomechanics processing engine and frontend analytics tools.
